Hints and Tips

Hints and Tips Before You Bring Your Vehicle In For a Smog Check

1) Fill your gas tank with the manufacturer recommended gas

2) Performing a Tune up & Oil change will help if you haven’t done one in a long time.

3) Make sure the check engine light or service light does not come on while driving. There is a 99.9% your vehicle will FAIL the test.

4) On 1996 & newer vehicles, if you recently had a service performed on your vehicle and the battery had been disconnected or if the battery had recently run out of power, make sure you drive at least 100 miles for a complete drive cycle. Your vehicle’s “brain” needs “re-learn” and the ODBII needs to complete. Otherwise, your vehicle may FAIL the test for an incomplete drive cycle.

5) On older cars you should check & replace all rotten vacuum hoses related to the emissions control system and make sure they are connected correctly according to the under-hood vacuum routing diagram; otherwise, it will fail visual inspection as well as the emissions test.

6) Make sure the tire pressure on your car is correct and make sure that they are in good condition. Otherwise, your vehicle may jump off from the Dyno machine during the high speed test, kill your smog technician, and ruin your favorite test station.

*Please remember to bring the DMV renewal notice or your registration. The technician needs to scan the bar code on your notice; it will take much longer to manually key in the 17 digit VIN number and license plate twice into the test machine. Most technicians are very slow with typing and being able to scan the bar code will speed up the process greatly. Also, please don’t forget to bring cash or a credit card; most stations will not take checks and you certainly don’t want to walk a couple miles to the bank.

If you have had a bad day please don’t test your car. Your day will get worse if it fails.
