A STAR Certified Smog Test Station is a facility designated by the California DMV to conduct smog tests on vehicles specifically directed to undergo testing at a STAR station. These stations adhere to high standards set by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
Test-Only Stations are privately-owned smog check stations licensed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to inspect and certify most vehicles, including Gross Polluters. They perform smog testing only and cannot advise or perform smog repairs. Generally, smog check prices are very reasonable.
Most vehicles in California require a smog check every two years for registration renewal. However, newer gasoline vehicles (less than 8 years old) are exempt, as are older gasoline vehicles (1975 and older) and older diesel vehicles (1997 and older).
If your vehicle fails, you’ll need to have the necessary repairs done and then get it retested. A one-time Repair Cost Waiver may be available if you’ve already spent a significant amount on emission-related repairs but still can’t pass.
